Just for fun

If you’re interested in neologisms (new words) and examples of how usage is evolving along with society, take a peek at Word Spy, Paul McFedries’ Web site "devoted to lexpionage, the sleuthing of new words and phrases. These aren’t ‘stunt words’ or ‘sniglets,’ but new terms that have appeared multiple times in newspapers, magazines, books, Web sites, and other recorded sources."

The home page displays a random example of these terms; when I opened it I was greeted with this definition of hyper-parenting: "n. A child-rearing style in which parents are intensely involved in managing, scheduling, and enriching all aspects of their children’s lives." (I’ve known a few hyper-parents, much to my regret.)

You can browse an alphabetic index (where I found terms like actorvist, barfmail, and Chrismussakah) or a subject index, search for a term, and of course learn about McFedries’ book, Word Spy.

Well worth bookmarking, if you ask me. It even has an RSS feed, so I added this one to my Bloglines list.

Do you have a link for the RSS feed? I looked on the site and couldn't find it.

Sorry for not posting it. I usually use the "Subscribe with Bloglines" bookmarklet when I find a site I'd like to keep up with, and it finds feeds for me. The URL for the RSS feed is http://www.wordspy.com/rss.xml.

Great find on hyper-parenting. I've loved lexpionage and think it is a huge reflexion of the cultural shifts. Beta, for example. I wrote a piece on that http://motherpie.typepad.com/motherpie/2006/05/beta_baby_betai.html

I tried to get into wordspy.com and had problems...
